Work of a MIG Welder
MIG welding is an arc welding procedure that involves feeding a continuous solid wire electrode through a welding gun and into the weld pool to fuse the two base materials together. The welding cannon also emits a shielding gas, which protects the weld pool from contamination. Metal inert gas, or MIG for short, is a type of inert gas used in welding. Gas metal arc welding (or GMAW) is the technical term for it, wire welding is it’s slang term.
Safety Precautions
- Examine your cords- Check your welding equipment before striking an arc to ensure sure all of the cable connections are secure and free of fraying or other damage.
- Choose the polarity- of the electrodes. MIG welding necessitates the use of a DC electrode with a positive or reverse polarity. The polarity connectors are often found on the machine’s inside.
- Set the gas flow rate- Set the shielding gas flow rate to 20 to 25 cubic feet per hour and turn it on. Apply a soapy water solution to your gas hose and look for bubbles if you suspect a leak. If you notice a leak, replace the hose with a new one.
- Make sure the tension is correct– Poor wire feeding performance can be caused by too much or too little strain on the drive rolls or the wire spool hub. Adjust according to the instructions in your owner’s handbook.
- Examine the consumables- Remove excess splatter from contact tubes, replace damaged contact tips and liners, and discard rusted wire.
